A Recovery Check is an official Ledger utility app that lets you verify your recovery phrase directly on your Ledger device — without ever typing it into a computer or exposing it online. This is the safest way to confirm your backup is accurate.
What Is Recovery Check?
Recovery Check is a free, official app developed by Ledger. It compares the recovery phrase you enter on your device against the one stored in the Secure Element chip. If they match, your backup is correct. If not, you'll know immediately that something is wrong with your written copy — before you deposit any funds.
Security Note: Because the check happens entirely on the device, your recovery phrase never touches your computer, phone, or the internet. This eliminates the risk of keyloggers, malware, or phishing sites stealing your words.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Install Recovery Check via Ledger Live
Connect and unlock your Ledger device with your PIN.
Open Ledger Live on your computer.
Navigate to the Manager tab.
If prompted, press both buttons on your Ledger to "Allow Ledger Manager".
In the app catalog, scroll down until you find "Recovery Check".
Click Install. You'll see "Processing..." on your Ledger for a few seconds.
Step 2: Launch Recovery Check on Your Device
On your Ledger device, use the left/right buttons to scroll through the installed apps.
Find "Recovery Check" and press both buttons to open it.
Press both buttons again to select "Start check".
Step 3: Select Word Count
Choose the number of words in your recovery phrase (typically 24 words).
Press both buttons to confirm your selection.
Step 4: Enter Your Recovery Phrase
This is the core verification step. You will re-enter each word from your written backup:
For each word, use the left/right buttons to scroll through the alphabet.
Press both buttons to select each letter.
After entering 2–4 letters, the device will show a list of possible matching words from the BIP39 word list.
Scroll to the correct word and press both buttons to select it.
Repeat for all 24 words in the exact order you wrote them down.
Step 5: Review the Result
"Recovery Phrase Matches" — Your backup is correct and complete. You can safely delete the Recovery Check app to free space if needed.
"Recovery Phrase Does Not Match" — Your written phrase has an error. Common issues include:
Misspelled words
Words written out of order
Missing or duplicated words
Illegible handwriting
If it doesn't match, carefully review your recovery sheet and try again. If you still can't resolve it, consider creating a new wallet and transferring funds before it's too late.
